SAKKARIN HIGHMOUNTAIN 島崎藤村の自然観念

詩人としての才能にめぐまれなかった独歩や花袋にとって、小説家への転身は、自然の必要であり、したがってわりに容易であったに対し、四つの詩集によって、詩人として第一 人者の名声を得た藤村にとっては、小説家として再出発するのは、容易ならぬことでした 。

しかし「落梅集」を最後にして、心のなかの詩が枯れたという自覚と、時勢の微妙な推移は、藤村に散文にうつる決意をさせたので、彼はこの準備にほぼ五年を費やしています。 。

その間、地方住まいを利用して、ラスキンに学んで自然の「スタディ」を行ったりします 。独歩を動かし、天外を動かしていた「自然」の観念は、この透谷の友人をも支配してい たのですが、藤村にとって、「自然」にふれることは、おそらく表現の形式をも含めて、「自分を新しくする」ことでした。
